‘East Meets West’ Concert March 2010
In the Autumn of 2009 we were approached by Peter Dunkley, Head of NMPAS, who asked if we would be willing to organise a concert in March 2010 for some very special groups visiting this country from Japan. Mr Parker, always keen to showcase young musical talent, agreed and the end result, our ‘East Meets West’ concert was probably the best, most amazing evening of entertainment we have ever been involved with at NSG.
We were delighted to be joined by Japanese students and staff from Yatshushiro Shirayuri Gakuen High School, Toride Seitoku School and Kurume Shin-ai High School. Members of the County Youth Guitar Ensemble, Zingaresque 1, Zingaresque 2, our very own Concert Band and Madrigalis all contributed to give us entertainment of the highest standard. Each group performed a selection of individual pieces and the evening ended with a joint finale of Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 (with lots of flag waving), Jerusalem and the Japanese ‘Shima Uta’ by The Boom. The concert was an excellent example of International Community Cohesion.
Our thanks must go to NSG’s host families who did a wonderful job of looking after the students from Yatshushiro Shirayuri Gakuen High School. Their initial worries and concerns, in particular about the language barrier, soon disappeared and the students, from home and abroad, all benefitted from an amazing cultural experience. We hope to be able to make a return visit to Japan in 2011.
It was a real privilege to work alongside international students and staff, to learn about their music culture and to give them a glimpse of ours.
Jazz Cafe 2010
NSG hosted its fourth Jazz Cafe this January. The event, created by music college director Paul Parker is an informal event involving jazz musicians from within the school, in the community and elsewhere. The event utilises the Spinney Theatre and our theatre foyer so that audiences had two options throughout the night.
